STARTING THE GAME off with TRUCE looked like it might, provisionally, point the way to an ending, planting a green T at one end of the word and a green E at the other. Now to bring the two sides together: THOSE? Yes to the H, no to the rest. The gap was narrowing, but what could satisfy it? Which vowel would it be? THANE would be ridiculous, Wordle couldn't possibly go in for Shakespeare. THINE was almost as silly, but nothing else came to mind—until I saw the I and the N come up gray, pushing the game to the fourth round. Not I, still not likely to be A, and that left...Y. THYME. A dusty old noun from the back of the word-rack, sitting unused for years.
