September 15, DOUBT, 4/6
A VOWEL-HEAVY opener, ALONE, did nothing put pick out one solitary vowel, a yellow O. PORCH gave the vowel somewhere to sit, turning it green, while the rest of the word was inaccessible. JOUST finally knocked back the gray, with a green U and T to go with the O. It looked at an anxious first glance as if the possibilities could go on forever: _ O U _ T. But not really. With N, L, R, and S all gone, the candidates to fill that space between the OU and the T were limited. What paired with the T? It would have to be B, wouldn't it? Was I overlooking something, on my way off the bottom of the grid? I played DOUBT, it turned green. No reason to have worried or hesitated, after all.

September 17, 2022: CHUTE, 3/6
AFTER THE GREAT PARER debacle, it seemed like the healthiest thing was to act as if the game was back to normal. So from yesterday's MERIT opener, I moved on to the obvious BADGE. Four gray and a green E at the end. You could fall off the board with a start like that, but why begin to worry now? For round two I calmly changed direction into CURVE: green C, yellow U, and that green E at the end. The ends were in place; the vowels were identified. The most logical thing to go with the C was an H, which would make CHUTE, which came up green. Not a slide into despair, but a gentle landing.
September 18, STICK, 4/6
I FORGOT TO check whether I had already used SHRED as an opener, and I used it again. Green S, nothing more. Moving from consonant-heavy to vowel-heavy, I tried SOAPY and got the same result. The number of things that would pair with S, or of vowels to come after that, was dwindling. STINK was the most entertaining play that came to mind. And it was almost right: green everywhere but the N. Swap in a C and the green would adhere to that spot, too.
