WEATHER REVIEWS
New York City, July 25, 2024
★★★★ Morning was cloudy again, but the sun came out during the long wait for the air conditioner to arrive. When the delivery came at last, the air through the briefly empty sleeve in the wall was hot but not overwhelmingly so. The clouds restored themselves, bringing with them a near-neutral mildness. A pigeon flapped down into the community garden with a wheezing sound. The remains of the heatwave were tenaciously hanging on in the subway. Above ground again, light was washing over the East Village from an opening in the west. Through a long stay in the dining shed, the evening sank into a more and more comfortable night, one that not even the Hare Krishnas parading past could disturb. A star shone at the zenith over First Avenue. Uptown there were more stars showing, and the breeze coming over the low ridge was so genuinely fresh that it was time to lean over the new AC and open the window.

Tomato Sandwiches à la Etta
Sandwiches de Tomate à l'Etta
Cut sixteen slices of bread very thin and spread them with some butter; sprinkle eight of them with finely chopped cress and with pepper and salt. Cut hard solid tomatoes in very thin slices and arrange them on top of the cress and on top of that put the other slices of buttered bread. Trim the sandwiches all around and cut them in oblong shape. Arrange them on a platter in the form of a rose and garnish each of them with a thin slice of egg and some pimentos around, and with cress in the center.
If you decide to prepare and attempt to enjoy a sandwich inspired by this offering, be sure to send a picture to indignity@indignity.net.
